Welcome to Sumatra Lodge: The Ulzen family wishes you a comfortable stay. Sumatra Lodge is named in memory of Hermanus Ulzen, great - grandfather of Edward Ulzen, an international public servant who bought this house in 1960. Hermanus Ulzen served in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army from 1832 -1837. He was one of the first 44 volunteers from the coast and sailed to the East Indies on the brig "Clara Henrietta". He fought in the Padri War and was wounded in Lampong, Aceh Province, Sumatra and awarded a bronze cross. He was one of the first African veterans to return to Elmina from Java. In 1872,as the spokesman for the 'Freeburghers' (Africans of Dutch descent), he was instrumental in aiding the peaceful transition of Dutch Elmina to British rule. He was the great -grandson of Roloef Ulsen, Dutch Govenor of Elmina (1755 - 57). Edward Ulzen became the first Registrar of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technolgy, after it was created from the Kumasi College of Technology. He later pursued a now - renowned career as an educationist and university administrator in East, Central and Southern Africa. During his active retirement, among many activities, he served his country as the Chairman of the Board of the Bureau of Ghanaian Languages. He also served on the Task Force which established the new Roman Catholic University, recently opened in Sunyani, Brong-Ahafo Region. He was a modest man, a musician, a thespian, a philanthropist and an avid student of history. He always welcomed the weary traveller.
